Scientists are weird lot. They recently got excited about isolating and studying a hard-to-culture, ultra-small bacteria, called TM7, which is linked to gum disease. They not only were they able to grow this bacterium, so they could study it, but they were also able to sequence its genetic code. They wanted to discover how this very small bacterium infects, or rather parasitizes larger bacteria. This new information could shed light on other, ultra-small bacteria that live in the human body and increase in number, in certain mouth disease conditions. This could help improve our understanding and treatment of oral health.
